Southall 2 (Marius Tajs 88, Joseph Aqua 90+2)
Kings Langley 3 (Joe Gallagher 44, Craig Lynskey 67, Gary Connolly 85 pen )
Continuous rain throughout threatened to turn the second half into a lottery, but Kings mastered the conditions to outplay Southall, a reversal of the home fixture a month earlier. A Nathan Pooley shot was fumbled into the net by Gary Jallow in the second minute, but the flag was already raised, before Jack Johnson’s surging wing run was illegally halted, but Craig Lynskey’s resultant penalty was saved. Kings continued in the ascendancy, with a Gary Connolly shot tipped round the post, but as the home side threatened for the first time, Jack Johnson cleared a shot off the line and Cyrus Vanterpool fired inches over. However, the experienced Craig Preston marshalled the defence well in tricky conditions and it was Kings who went in with a half time lead when Joe Gallagher, who gave a master class in forward link play, picked up the ball on the left and Jallow could only help his shot into the net. Southall responded strongly and the visitors’ gamble of fielding a partially fit Ross Hampton was justified with a superb save from the dangerous Joseph Aqua. The keeper was off his line again for a brave block from Tom Dawson, but this provided the springboard for Gary Connolly, majestic in midfield, to release Craig Lynskey. The tall striker shrugged off the attendant defender to outwit and round the keeper on an unpredictable pitch to slot home the vital second. A massive Ross Hampton clearance then nearly produced a bizarre goal, bouncing over his opposite number and halting a few feet from the goal line, before an alert assistant saw a pull on Tom Carter’s run and Gary Connolly dispatched the spot kick. Southall claimed a consolation in the 88th minute, and then a blatantly offside Joseph Aqua gave it an unrealistic scoreline during a baffling eight minutes of time added on, but this could not detract from arguably THE performance of the season from a superb Langley team.
